Tranny Installation

Just got a call from a customer telling me his new tranny is running like a champ.

Last week he wasn’t so elated. He’d called me to complain about his new tranny. He said, with the car on the rack, the tranny was shifting through the gears fine. However, with the car running and the clutch engaged, it would not go into gear, not any of the gears. He was concerned that the tranny had a problem.

If a tranny won’t engage on any gears, the problem is someplace upstream from the tranny. He’d installed a new clutch disk, pressure plate and throwout bearing. He was sure he had the correct pedal adjustment. I asked him to back track from the clutch pedal, through the z-bar to the clutch fork, looking for worn parts. Sure enough, he found some wear and replaced those items. That fixed the problem.
