Fluids In 196x and 197x 4 Speed Trannies
“Up for bid is a new Auto Gear M-22 Muncie 4-speed…the transmission was never used. When I received it I put Redline synthetic lube in to protect the internals.”
Hoo-boy. I get calls from folks who’ve added synthetic fluids to these transmissions and I just cringe. Fact is, the tranny described above (and fetching strong bidding on eBay) will have to be completely disassembled, cleaned and reassembled before it will work right.
You see, the synthetics are just too fine a lubricant. They coat the gears, adding too much slippage for the synchro ring to grip. Once used, everything gets coated and it’s nasty to remove.
