Shifty Business Reflects on Tranny

I’ve been encouraging customers to have me set up their shifter along with the transmission.

It seems mechanics aren’t very familiar with shifters and struggle to make a match that works with a Muncie 4 speed transmission.

In the last few months, I’ve taken in several transmissions that were causing problems. Most of them came from mechanics who were convinced the transmission was junk. Last week, a transmission came in that had been built by a tranny builder I know. The Speed Shop owner described the problem, and identified it as a rotten transmission.

I know the tranny shop that built this tranny, and they do good work from everything I’ve ever seen of theirs. So, I asked the fellow to bring in the shifter along with the transmission.

When they arrived I got more of the story. The vehicle owner bought the shifter and had it installed when he got the new tranny. It didn’t work right, so he took the car into the Speed Shop and they skipped over the shifter to question the viability of the transmission.

Sure enough, the shifter was a mess. It was the wrong shifter and had been “forced” to feed the transmission.

I’m confident that once we put the correct shifter on, the transmission will be great.

The worst case I got was 7 months ago. Someone had a shifter that wasn’t correct, but they installed it anyway, after bending several of the shifter rods! This fiasco wasn’t something I could fix. They’d run the tranny for too long for me to be sure correcting the shifter would solve the problem, so this turned into an expensive mistake. We got the correct shifter, and then re-built the tranny.

There are lots of folks who re-build transmissions. But it takes experience to know how to fit the working parts together. Most of us who were around to work on these cars when they came off the line are retiring now. For once, my grey hair is a good selling point.

Now, if I could just make money on my bald spot, I’d be in clover!
