How to Set Up a Muncie Tranny and Shifter

Here’s the instructions from Hurst on setting up your Munce 4-speed transmission and shifter.

1. Move the stick to NEUTRAL. Insert the neutral alignment rod through the notches of the shifter frame and the holes in the levers. Remove all original linkage.

2. Assemble rods with rod adjusting buttons. Spin buttons about half-way up on the thread length of the rods. Assemble hooked ends of rods with transmission arms, using nylon bushings. Secure rods in bushings with spring clips. (David: A performance package called a pit pack is available with steel bushings to replace the nylon bushings.)

3. Install the 3-4 rod and arm assembly on the transmission. Adjust the rod adjusting button on the rod until it slips into the hole in the 3-4 lever of the shifter. (CHECK THAT ALL TRANSMISSION SHAFTS ARE IN NEUTRAL.) Secure button in lever with spring clips.

4. CARS WITH CONSOLES
Remove neutral alignment rod (Pt. 1725). Move stick to 3rd and back to 4th. If stick can be moved from 3rd to 4th without striking console, proceed to step 6. If stick strikes edge of console opening, correct as follows: Remove 3-4 rod adjusting button from lever; install neutral alignment pin; loosen both Shifter mounting bolkts and move stick away from the point of interference, enough to eliminate it. Tighten both Shifter mounting bolts. Repeat step 5 to check this adjustment.

5. Replace neutral alignment rod. Install 1-2 arm rod and reverse arm rod assemblies. Adjust rod adjusting buttons to permit easy assembly with nylon bushings inserted in holes in levers. Fasten with spring clips.

6. Test shifter through all gears. If stick does not move freely from side to side in neutral between the three levers, check the neutral alignment. the neutral alignment rod will not enter the lever that is out of alignment.
